Herberto Helder, one of Portugal’s greatest 20th century poets, dies at 84

    Highly regarded as the greatest Portuguese poet of the latter 20th century, Herberto Helder, born in Funchal, Madeira in 1930, died this past Monday, March 23, in Cascais. Although the news of the 84-year-old poet’s death was released by his family, the cause of death remains unknown.

    The father of political commentator Daniel Oliveira was born Herberto Helder Luis Bernardes de Oliveira, and came from Jewish ancestry. He studied law in the Universidade de Coimbra and then Romantic Philology in Lisbon, although he did not complete either course of study.
