Writing the Luso-American Experience: Oona Patrick

Oona Patrick is a poet and writer in Brooklyn who challenges our established ideas of what a “Luso-American” is. Born in Provincetown, MA, where her paternal family emigrated from the Azores (where the Patrício name came from), Patrick’s outlook and education are “completely American”, one many would deem too far removed from a traditional Luso-American experience to qualify her as portuguesa. However, what makes this extraordinary writer and recent NYFA Fellowship recipient so genuinely Luso is her commitment to and celebration of all the diverse Luso narratives in existence, including her own.
